Compass concept

Balance sheet strength

Whether the company's debts are conservative enough to survive hard times.

Definition

Balance sheet strength weighs a company's debt and obligations against its cash, assets, and earning power. A conservative balance sheet carries manageable debt and enough liquidity to weather downturns without forced decisions.

Why it matters

Financial strength keeps a good business alive through a recession or a shock. Over-leveraged companies can be forced to sell assets, dilute owners, or fail at the worst possible time.

Watch-outs

Debt that looks fine in good times can turn dangerous when cash flows fall, weigh the balance sheet under stress, not just today.
